Ryan Abramson: Learning Update for 2025

The speaker series for 2025 has been announced and is full of exciting new authors. The list includes travel writer Rick Steves, a traveler like me. Fox News personality Juan Williams - who is a speaker and author. And Anthony Jack, a fellow supporter of equity in higher education. As I wrote this year, (see Ryan Abramson article on equity in college admissions) there are enormous challenges for marginalized communities in the higher ed application process. As a speaker, writer and blogger, these events really help to form my perspective and creative thinking.

Library Speaker Series

The Free Library of Philadelphia speaker series has long been a beacon of knowledge, cultural exchange, and community engagement. As one of the nation’s premier public library systems, it serves as more than a repository of books—it is a place where ideas thrive, and connections are forged. For me, Ryan Abramson, the Free Library holds a special place in my heart. It’s a space where authenticity meets opportunity, and its Speaker Series embodies the city’s positive spirit.

This November, I had the privilege of attending one of its most anticipated events: former President Bill Clinton’s talk about his book Citizen: My Life After the White House. The evening, held in the heart of Center City Philadelphia, was an extraordinary blend of reflection, inspiration, and the kind of authentic dialogue that the Speaker Series has come to symbolize.

The Free Library: Legacy of Learning

Founded in 1891, the Free Library of Philadelphia was established to provide "free books for all" and has since grown into a sprawling system of 54 branches across the city. Its iconic Parkway Central Library, located on Logan Circle, is a striking example of Beaux-Arts architecture. Bill Clinton’s Talk

After the event, I took the opportunity to explore the city on this mild November evening. The glow of the Philadelphia skyline reflected off the Schuylkill River, creating a magical atmosphere. I drove home through some of the city’s most vibrant neighborhoods, from the cobblestone streets of Old City to the lively corridors of Fishtown and South Philly. Each area tells its own story, showcasing the authenticity and resilience that define Philadelphia.

Philadelphia is more than just its landmarks and history; it’s the people who bring it to life. The city’s residents embody a sense of community that is both welcoming and real. It’s this authenticity that makes Philadelphia so special to me, and it’s why I encourage others to explore it with an open heart.
